Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback specialized in training the brain and is noninvasive in nature. Neurofeedback is an alternative to medication that allows functional brain changes which stick for a lifetime. While medication can help the brain to function better, it often works as a Band-Aid. When medication is ceased, the brain regresses to the prior state. Instead, neurofeedback teaches the brain how to naturally function more effectively. It uses operant conditioning during real-time EEG readings. The brain is rewarded when it matches the correct brain wave frequency. Over time, the brain begins to naturally function within the correct frequencies on its own. At Cognitive Solutions, we use Brain Avatar and LENS neurofeedback training, both of which are FDA approved.
FAQ
Neurofeedback Frequently Asked Questions
Quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) is a tool used to read electrical activity in the form of brainwaves. It is also known as a brain map. It is only a reading, and no treatment is being administered. The brain map allows us to read 5 frequencies–delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma. The map pinpoints if brain activity is too high or too low and in which regions of the brain. It also helps identify how different parts of the brain are functioning and interacting.
Low Energy Neurofeedback System (LENS) is a bit different than traditional neurofeedback. The treatment is directive as we stimulate the brain to reset itself and achieve optimal performance. The machine uses a very low power electromagnetic field, like radio frequencies or cell phone frequencies. Although the feedback signal is weak, it produces a measurable change in the brainwaves without conscious effort from the individual receiving the feedback.
Some people have reported mild side effects, typically feelings of fatigue or feeling wired. Some individuals have reported a mild headache that lasts a short period of time after the session ends. It is important to communicate any side effects with your provider as it may require adjustments to your protocol.
Sessions will depend on your individualized treatment. However, sessions are typically conducted twice a week, nonconsecutively.
Typically, we will complete 30-40 sessions for Brain Avatar clients and 20-25 sessions for LENS clients. Once these sessions are completed, we will conduct a new QEEG to compare results from the baseline brain map.
Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes, though it varies per individualized protocols. We schedule an hour with clients to allow time for hook up and conversations around treatment.
Every person is going to experience results differently and at different times. When you start neurofeedback, the first few sessions work for 24 hours before your brain regresses back to its ‘original’ patterns. As more sessions are completed, progress starts increasing as the brain begins to understand what it needs to do, and these pattern changes begin to stick. Many individuals begin seeing real change within 20-30 sessions.
No, medication does not need to be stopped during neurofeedback. Neurofeedback helps to reduce or eliminate the need for many medications. During the process, we can consult with your doctor regarding dosage titration as training progresses.
Neurofeedback is training irregular brainwaves to improve brain regulation. It can help a variety of different disorders including ADHD, anxiety, depression, traumatic brain injuries/concussions, defiant behaviors, headaches/migraines, learning disabilities, PTSD, and Epilepsy.
At Cognitive Solutions, we work with children ages 6 and up, as long as the child can sit still during the QEEG and treatment.
We will work with pregnant women on the BrainAvatar system. Since there is not enough research on LENS with pregnant women, we will not work with pregnant women on that system. We highly suggest consulting with your physician before engaging with neurofeedback treatment. Our providers are happy to consult with your physician during your treatment.
We are in-network with most PPO policies. Coverage and benefits vary per policy. Please call our office and have your insurance card ready for us to check the benefits for you.
Some people do not feel comfortable making deposits or scheduling until they get a chance to see the clinic and meet the clinician. If this is the case, we can schedule an initial consultation. If you would prefer to meet with the clinician for a consultation, please contact our office for our staff to check your insurance benefits.
