Dyslexia Services
Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability that primarily affects an individual’s ability to read and write. People with dyslexia often experience difficulties with word recognition, spelling, and reading fluency, which can impact their reading comprehension and overall academic performance.
Symptoms of Dyslexia:
- Difficulty reading, particularly reading words in isolation
- Problems with spelling, including frequently misspellings and reversing letters
- Slow and laborious reading
- Difficulty with reading comprehension
- Avoidance of reading activities
- Challenges with phonological processing, such as difficulty recognizing and manipulating sounds in words
Diagnosis of Dyslexia:
Diagnosing dyslexia involves comprehensive neuropsychological assessments that evaluate various aspects of reading and language skills. These assessments may include cognitive testing to assess overall intelligence and specific cognitive abilities, academic achievement tests to evaluate reading, writing, and spelling skills, and phonological processing assessments to measure the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in words.
Treatment and Support for Dyslexia:
- Individualized Education Plans (IEP): Customized educational plans that outline specific goals and strategies for supporting the student’s learning needs.
- Reading Interventions: Programs designed to improve reading skills, such as phonics-based approaches and structured literacy programs.
- Accommodations: Adjustments to the learning environment, such as extra time on tests, audiobooks, and assistive technology.
- Executive Functioning Support: Strategies to improve organization, time management, and study skills, helping individuals with dyslexia manage their academic workload more effectively. This includes breaking down tasks into manageable steps, developing self-monitoring skills to become more aware of their reading process and improve accuracy and comprehension, and providing techniques to enhance retention, such as summarizing, predicting, and questioning while reading.
